General Description:
The primary responsibility of the Medical Director (MD) is to ensure the hospital offers the highest quality of veterinary care and customer service. Medical Directors are also responsible to drive the vision of the practice and work collaboratively with the Hospital Administrator (HA) to create and support a highly functional team and a positive work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Medical
- Drive the delivery of high-quality veterinary care
- Maintain medical records according to LVG Medical Record Requirements and perform regular chart audits on all associate DVM’s medical records
- Promote and drive high standards of care using the following as guidelines:
- American Animal Hospital Accreditation (AAHA) Standards
- Lakefield Veterinary Group Medical Advisory Board recommendations
- Abide by the state practice act and any laws that pertain to practicing veterinary medicine and veterinary medical facilities in the state where the practice is located
- Address adverse medical events and respond appropriately
- Maintain controlled substances in accordance with DEA requirements and Lakefield Controlled Substance Protocol
- Team building
- Work with the HA to develop training protocols for support staff
- Develop written guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for hospital
- Participate in hiring doctors as well as key support staff
- Mentor associate doctors in medical skills, surgical skills, finance, communication, and client relations
- Performance Reviews:
- Provide real time feedback to all team members to encourage, engage and empower them to improve their performance
- Provide annual reviews in alignment with anniversary date of employment
- Business/Financial
- Work in concert with the Hospital Administrator, the Regional Director of Operations (RD), and the Regional Medical Director to set financial goals and strive to meet or exceed them
- Participate in the annual budget process
- Assist the HA with client communication and conflict resolution related to veterinary care and team leadership
- Ensure the facilities and equipment are well maintained
- Doctor scheduling
- Strive to build and maintain an excellent reputation in the community promoting the practice and encouraging participation in community events
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills of delegation, organization, and coordination of hospital team
- Demonstrate excellent analytical skills
- Demonstrate excellent written/oral skills
- Possess interpersonal/listening skills to interact effectively with individuals of all backgrounds, experience, and educational levels
- Ability to coach, mentor, and encourage the practice team to deliver consistent, high-quality medicine, customer service, and patient care
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
Required Education/Experience:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree (DVM, VMD)
- License in good standing – applicable to state(s) where they are practicing
- Current DEA license
- Leadership experience/training preferred
