This is an unpaid position Application cycle is ongoing

PURPOSE: To provide zoological/wildlife medicine experience to veterinary students. This is an unpaid position. Students must provide their own insurance, transportation and housing.

DUTIES:

  • Shadowing and exposure to many aspect of zoological/wildlife/aquatic animal medicine 
  • Student will propose a final project focusing on an area of interest, to be presented to VLM staff
  • Assist the museum’s veterinary technician as needed
  • Perform necropsies under the guidance of the veterinarian 
  • Care for hospitalized patients
  • Medical record keeping

  • Must be a pre-veterinary or current veterinary medical student
  • Strong interest in wildlife/zoological medicine
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted (50 pounds assisted) 
  • Ability to follow all safety guidelines to ensure welfare of animals and safety of volunteers and staff
  • Recent pre-exposure rabies vaccination or adequate titer within the last 2 years
  • Tetanus booster within the last 10 years
