The SPCA for Monterey County is expanding their HQHV Spay and Neuter and Shelter program and needs Full-time, Part-time and Contract/Relief Veterinarians to provide spay/neuter surgeries for public and shelter animals and for companion animal herd-health management in cooperation with shelter leadership and fellow staff veterinarians.

 The successful candidate

• Must hold or obtain a valid California DVM license and be eligible to hold a DEA registration.
• Must be able to perform routine canine and feline spays and neuters independently. Mentorship available to increase surgical speed and volume to HQHV target of 20-25 procedures per day, and to learn to independently handle more challenging patients (geriatric, obese, pregnant, pyometra, cryptorchid)
• Is willing and able to work one Saturday per month in exchange for a weekday off.
• Has a minimum of one year veterinary experience, preferably in a shelter or spay/neuter clinic setting.
• Participates in training staff, volunteers, students from our local accredited VA/RVT training program, and occasional veterinary student externs.
• Conducts shelter rounds in rotation with fellow veterinary staff members.
• Reports to the VP of Shelter and Clinic Services

Additional desirable skills:

• Spanish language fluency
• Soft tissue surgery (entropion and cherry eye repair, cystotomy, GI foreign body, limb/digit/tail amputation)
• Canine/ feline dentistry
• Rabbit spay/neuter
• Forensic examination and necropsy
• The SPCA has a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation center and a Horse and Barn Animal Rescue program. This position is not required to support these programs, but veterinarians with relevant experience may choose to spend 1-2 half days per week working with one of these programs.
