The San Francisco SPCA believes that every animal deserves quality care. One of the key members of the team leading that charge is our Director of Shelter Medicine. This individual leads a dynamic and passionate staff of veterinarians and technicians to provide excellent medical care to the thousands of homeless animals that enter the SF SPCA shelter and assists our partner shelters to maintain good welfare and outcomes in their facilities. The SF SPCA is a progressive organization that thrives on innovation, science, data, collaboration, and a sense of urgency to increase lifesaving capacity.
To provide the highest standard of shelter management practices with high levels of accountability for results this Director position will have a mix of approximately (40%) clinical/surgery, (15%) training and development of DVMs, and (45%) administrative functions to include budget management, strategic planning, departmental collaboration, and partnering with leaders of the Adoption, Volunteer, Behavior, Community Medicine, and Hospital departments.
The Director oversees the coordination of all controlled substance processes including ensuring compliance with medical staff activity related to ethical and legal compliance, SF SPCA rules and regulations, and all external regulatory agencies including but not limited to CVMB, DEA, DHHS, federal and state mandates.

DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school in general practice
Active, non-restricted CA state veterinary license or ability to obtain one
5+ years of shelter medicine experience, preferably in a leadership role
Experience with HQHV Spay/Neuter surgery, able to train and mentor staff in efficient technique
Deep understanding of the value and implementation of active population management; capacity for care; herd health; and data-driven decision making
Experience developing & monitoring departmental budgets, payroll, and vendor relationships
5+ years of experience leading and mentoring veterinarians and a successful record in team development
Ideal candidate will have an investment in shelter medicine as a career; preference given to candidates who have achieved Board Certification and/or advanced education opportunities in the field
Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office and patient records/management systems; knowledge of PetPoint a plus
