RVMG VETERINARY INTERNSHIPS AND EXTERNSHIPS

Our veterinary student extern/intern program is designed for fouth year veterinary students on rotation wishing to gain additional exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic services for dogs, cats, exotics, and additional specialty patients in a small animal general practice setting. We work with the local Animal Control and shelter, and a 501c3 organization that provides medial care to raptors and avian wildlife. We are a group of four small animal veterinary clinics nestled near the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in Bentonville, Arkansas. We strive to provide quality medicine and cultivate healthy veterinary workplace environments at all of our locations. 

Veterinary students choosing to intern or extern with our veterinary clinics will be 
assigned a primary veterinary hospital and veterinarian mentor based on their interests 
and goals. Internships and Externships are normally two to three weeks in duration, but 
longer durations will be considered pending circumstances. All four of our locations are 
primarily small animal general practices with no on-call and rotating Saturday shifts. 
Specific practices have additional exposure options for raptor/wildlife medicine, shelter 
and animal control medicine, and exotic medicine pending interest. Internships and 
externships are expected to be 80-100% small animal with 0-20% special interest 
selection. Student interns and externs are expected to work an average of 42 hours a 
week and may be asked to work both weekends to maximize exposure to cases and 
experiences.

The Rose Veterinary Clinics Internships and Externship Program offers a student 
stipend up to $100.00 per week. We do not offer housing, though can suggest local, 
long term stay hotels. Average workday hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with 
students interested in raptor or animal control experiences having occasional shifts that 
may extend past 8:00 p.m. pending caseloads. Reading requirements may be assigned 
during the evenings by your primary mentor. Applications require a cover letter, letter of recommendation, and two references. Our internships and externships are hands on 
and often fast pace – we always have a great time!

• Weekend, Evenings and Holiday shifts may be required
• May be required to work beyond a scheduled shift depending upon case load.

Education and Experience: 
• 3rd or 4th year veterinary student 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Medical
• Assist in examining animals to provide quality wellness and diagnostic medicine.
• Provide consultation on cases and communicate with DVM
• Perform laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests.
• Operate all diagnostic equipment and interpret the results.
• Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post-surgery patients and treatment plan 
guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment including 
client follow up post hospitalization.
• Scientific knowledge accompanied by basic intellectual attitudes, ethical professional 
attitudes and behaviors and moral principles that are essential for a responsible 
veterinarian to possess.
• Preform other duties assigned.
Clerical
• Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and patient records.
Customer Service
• Interact with clients and employees in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and 
professionalism. 
• Answer client questions and provide education on various aspects of internal medicine
care and treatment. 
• Call back/follow-up with clients; recommend medical progress visits when appropriate.
Veterinary Policies/Procedures
• Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post-surgery patients and treatment 
plan guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment 
including client follow up post hospitalization.
• Participate in business development as instructed by management and/or ownership.
• Attend team meetings and other pertinent in-house training.
Personnel
• Train and supervise team members who handle and care for animals; as needed.
• Deal with clients and employees in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and 
professionalism. 
• Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively influence the 
level of care and service provided to the clients and patients.

COMPETENCY:
Professional Skills
• Sufficient motor function to elicit information from patients by palpation, auscultation, 
percussion and other diagnostic maneuvers. The associate should be able to 
execute motor activities reasonably required to provide general care and safe 
restraint, to perform diagnostic procedures and to provide medicine treatment to 
patients.
• Good judgment in patient assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic planning; associate 
must be able to identify and communicate this knowledge to others when appropriate.
• The associate must possess the mental and emotional health required for full 
utilization of his or her intellectual abilities, the exercise of good judgment, the prompt 
completion of all responsibilities and responsibilities attendant to the diagnosis and 
care of patients, and the development of mature, sensitive and effective relationships

• This internship will require a working knowledge basis of the duties listed below:
o Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of veterinary medicine and 
science. Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and 
scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory 
tests.
o Ability to read and interpret documents, including federal and state regulations, 
operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, medical texts.
o Ability to write reports and correspondences. 
o Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, 
and equipment including sterilization techniques for various instruments and 
materials.
o Biology – Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, 
functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the 
environment. 
o Medicine and Dentistry — Knowledge of the information and techniques needed 
to diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes 
symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and 
preventive health-care measures. 
o Client and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for 
providing client and personal services. This includes client needs assessment, 
meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of client satisfaction. 
o Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, 
and their applications. 
o Chemistry — Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties 
of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they 
undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, 
production techniques, and disposal methods.
o Sales and Marketing — Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, 
promoting, and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategy 
and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.
