![]() Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor of Avian Pathology
The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University seeks applications for a 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty position as Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor in diagnostic avian pathology at the Penn State Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) in University Park, PA. This is a full-time position and the appointment will include responsibilities in diagnostic service (70%), research (20%), and teaching (10%). The individual will join a leading team of faculty involved in addressing avian population health issues. This is a multi-year appointment funded for an initial five years from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding. The rank and salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
Primary duties of the position will include: Diagnostic Service: performing gross and histopathologic examinations on diagnostic avian necropsy cases, writing necropsy reports, consulting with submitting veterinarians and clients, assisting with undergraduate and veterinary extern instruction, and assisting with instruction of residents. The position will require communicating results and providing interpretation to clients (other ADL diagnosticians, client veterinarians and animal owners, livestock producers, regulatory agency officials, etc.), ensuring implementation of quality control/assurance and safety, developing, or expanding new test offerings/test platforms, and when needed representing the avian pathology section both within PADLS and externally at scientific/veterinary meetings and conferences. The incumbent will provide field based diagnostic investigation services to the poultry industry, producers, aviculturists, veterinarians and governmental agencies of Pennsylvania and USDA. The successful candidate will visit farms, hatcheries, processing plants and other avian enterprises to diagnose, report and formulate prevention and control plans for spontaneously occurring diseases of poultry and a variety of other avian species.
Participation in appropriate local, regional, and national meetings is required. This incumbent will provide managerial oversight for daily operations of the pathology section and supervise technical staff, train and mentor staff and students.
Research: the successful applicant is expected to participate in applied collaborative research and disseminate information at professional meetings and through appropriate publications. Start-up research funds and research laboratory will be considered, commensurate on research experience and based on proposed research initiatives/projects by the incumbent. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborating on research projects and professional development.
Teaching: the successful candidate is expected to team teach courses in the VBSC rubric or and perhaps consider team teaching a part of a course in a new developed minor in “One Health”. Creative leadership in establishing and providing a variety of formal and informal client education programs is highly encouraged.
Applicants must hold a DVM/VMD (or equivalent) degree from an AVMA-accredited college/university. ACPV (American College of Poultry Veterinarians) board certification is required. A MS/Ph.D. and/or postdoctoral experience in avian medicine or relevant field of biomedical or veterinary research is desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and others across the university and community are required. The ADL is part of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians accredited tripartite Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) (http://www.padls.org). Animal Diagnostic Laboratory is a full service, AAVLD accredited, NAHLN laboratory with histopathology, necropsy, virology, serology, microbiology, parasitology, and molecular biology sections. The PADLS system performs several thousand diagnostic tests each year on a wide variety of food and companion animals and wildlife species. The PADLS diagnosticians collaborate on research projects, provide consultation and expert advice to clientele, commodity interest groups, veterinarians, research scientists, perform state and federal disease monitoring and surveillance programs, support field investigations and outreach/ extension activities. Applicants must upload a cover letter describing future professional goals as they relate to diagnostic pathology along with the Curriculum Vitae. Applicants are also encouraged to provide a narrative statement describing their research, teaching and extension goals and interests.
