The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is a national not-for-profit association established in 1863 which represents over 96,500 veterinarians nationwide. Its mission is to lead the profession by advocating for members by advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. Reporting to the CEO, the Editor-in-Chief/Division Director (EC/DD) provides strategic leadership and management of the print and online publication of AVMA’s scientific journals including planning, organizing, staffing, training, and managing all aspects of the Publications Division to achieve AVMA’s goals and to increase member readership and satisfaction. The EC/DD will work collaboratively with designated stakeholders to develop and recommend Journal strategies, policies, and procedures to AVMA leadership. S/he will have editorial autonomy regarding the selection and editing of scientific and medical articles submitted for publication. Working synergistically with AVMA staff and volunteer leadership, the EC/DD should be a scientific publications thought leader, providing ongoing innovative strategic vision that anticipates and reflects the rapidly changing publication landscape, with a goal that ensures AVMA’s scientific journals are viewed as the world class standard in peer-reviewed veterinary medical scientific publications. Moreover, the EC/DD should also provide the veterinary profession with the latest high-quality research and clinically relevant medical information for veterinary practitioners. Responsibilities: - Plans, directs, and supervises production of the association’s journals and related publications in print, online, and via email to ensure scientific validity and adherence to quality peer-review and editorial standards as well as production schedules.
- Works collaboratively with the Marketing and Communications Division and other staff to coordinate publication and inclusion of non-scientific components and content of the Journal.
- Develops and administers the divisional budget.
- Consistent with AVMA’s non-dues revenue strategy, works collaboratively with staff throughout the Association to identify, develop and implement related programs and products designed to generate non-dues revenue; as well as identify opportunities for non-dues revenue by leveraging/expanding current program offerings.
- Negotiates contracts, in adherence with AVMA policy, with journal printers, paper merchants, online journal service providers, advertising representative(s), and software companies whose products are used during production.
- Maintains liaison with printer(s), oversees design and format selection, quality control, and economic management of publications.
- Administers the library program.
- Oversees the Letters to the Editor process in adherence with the AVMA Letters to the Editor policy.
- Chooses artwork suitable for publication on the cover of the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association and negotiates contracts with the artist, museum, or gallery.
- Ensures that the official journal of the AVMA (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association) publishes association statements and pronouncements as directed.
- Collaborates with designated AVMA governance bodies and staff stakeholders regarding the publication of various special reports, editorials, and supplements.
- Provides staff assistance to governance entities as needed.
- Reports directly to the CEO and serves as a member of the senior leadership group on the Strategic Implementation Team.
- Responsible for the performance management of all direct reports as well as the entire Publications Division, including the establishment of ongoing goals and priorities; providing ongoing performance feedback; conducting annual performance appraisals; hiring; and applying appropriate disciplinary actions when applicable within the policies and procedures of the Association.
Location: AVMA is headquartered just outside of Chicago, in Schaumburg, IL. Illinois location is preferred, but Washington, DC office or other remote location may be considered.
