Enthusiastic, compassionate clinical veterinarian needed in a progressive not for profit clinic and animal shelter in the beautiful U.S. Virgin Islands. Successful candidate will join current veterinarian in supporting the rapidly growing low-cost community clinic as well as field/mobile work for a new community outreach program.
THIS is the opportunity to help animals and people without the limitations of owner finances.
Clinic hours (70%) include general wellness and sick patient appointments, and internal medicine at our low-cost clinic. Fieldwork (30%) involves door-to-door and mobile wellness/health screening clinics in targeted low-income, high surrender-rate neighborhoods.
Excellent client communication skills are essential as is the ability to provide non-biased support with consideration to the cultural and historical barriers that have prevented the development of strong veterinary–client–patient relationships and reduced pet retention. Experience and familiarity with Caribbean culture and/or bilingual in Spanish are highly desirable.
Founded in 1973, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (SCAWC) is the only open-access animal shelter on the island of St. Croix. It is a private non-for profit organization with a municipal contract for animal control. Intake is approximately 3000 animals per year serving a human population of 45,000.
The SCAWC Community Clinic is the first non-for-profit veterinary hospital in the territory, and one of the most impactful programs of the SCAWC. The clinic currently offers wellness and sick patient services, limited hospitalization, spay neuter surgeries, soft tissue surgery, feral TNVR, in-house CBC/Chem, CR radiology, orthopedic surgery, dentistry, and other services at the discretion of the attending veterinarian. The clinic has over 7500 active patients with rapid growth, and clientele has widely varied income levels and socioeconomic status. As there are no specialty or referral clinics in the USVI, general practitioners often offer a wide range of diagnostic, clinical and surgical services. Caseload is predominately small animal with occasional exotic pets (pocket pets, backyard poultry, avian) and wildlife cases (sea turtles and avian).
Successful candidate will pioneer the community outreach program, supported by a FT program coordinator and veterinary technician. Clinic and shelter medical support staff includes 4 FT technicians and receptionist. Anticipated hours are 40-50 hours per week. Clinic has in house CBC/Chemistry, CR radiology, Ultrasound, multiparameter monitors, electrosurgical unit, isoflurane gas anesthesia, dental scaler/polisher.
Position is predominately clinical, but other duties may include high volume spay neuter and other surgeries, emergency walk-in (no on-call), shelter animal exams and treatments, forensic examinations and reports on cruelty cases, and health certificates prepared for large transports. The SCAWC is also the contact for wildlife cases on St. Croix through collaboration with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and St. Croix Avian Sanctuary. There is opportunity and need for equine veterinary services that may be explored with the right candidate. This is a fast-paced work environment with a heavy caseload. However the SCAWC is supportive of a healthy work/life balance with ample opportunity to enjoy living in paradise.
Current veterinarian (Medical Director) has a strong surgical and shelter medicine focus and background and will continue to support shelter medical and surgical program as well as the community clinic with the intent of increased surgical hours with the addition of associate. Position will report to the medical director. New graduates will be considered, but at least one year experience is preferred. Salary to commensurate with experience.
Benefits include healthcare, vision, and dental insurance where organization pays 60%.
St. Croix is the least commercial of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and has the rural feel of a small community. The weather is consistently sunny with temperatures between 75-95 year round. Excellent opportunity for those who enjoy the outdoors and activities on the water.
