Full time job opening for an equine veterinarian with future buy-in potential
We are a 7 doctor mixed animal practice in southern Vermont looking for an equine practitioner who values work/life balance, patient care, client education, and building lasting relationships. If you're interested in coming to a place where you can settle down, put down roots, and grow, then this is the place for you! Our practice is tight-knit, and very unique - we are a co-op doctor-owned practice with an amazing full staff, including practice manager. We have weekly meetings with all the owners and the practice manager to address issues before they become problems and keep our finger on the pulse of the clinic. We share on-call with another local equine practice and have a great relationship with this partner practice. Our practice is mainly back yard horses, with a few sport horse barns. Get ready to know your clients really well, as they are likely to be your neighbors! Very little reproduction work is done currently, but there is the opportunity if the desire is there.
We currently offer chiropractic care, so certification would be beneficial, but not required. We purchased a new Sonosite M Turbo ultrasound in 2017, and are looking to add a new DR mobile x-ray setup (we currently have high quality CR) during 2019. A fully stocked practice vehicle could be supplied (SUV with vet box insert) if desired, or compensation (federal mileage rate) if you choose to use your own vehicle. We provide a motorized dental float (EZFloat system currently), and possibility for a full time dedicated assistant. We have in-house IDEXX blood machines, a 1-meter scope, an SAA and lactate reader, and great staff to process all your labwork for you during daytime hours. Mobile laptop with software provided, allowing you to look up clients who call on ER, or work on records from home. A small equine area is available at the clinic with 2 stalls and a set of wooden stocks (no outdoor area). We are also getting ready to introduce Wellness Plans for 2019 to further improve the care of our equine patients. We are just a few hours from several referral hospitals, including NEEMS, Tufts, VLAC, and Fairfield EQ, and have a great relationship with the clinicians at these facilities.
This position would be 4 days a week with 2-3 days on call each week, and every 3rd weekend. Pay is per diem (scheduled 4, 10-hour days), plus on-call weekend days, plus any emergency fees. Benefits include 4 days paid vacation (i.e. 1 week), practice vehicle use, health insurance stipend, AVMA/VVMA/AAEP dues paid, DEA and state licenses covered, PLIT liability covered, $1500 for CE + 4 days paid for CE. There is the potential for lodging included, as there is currently an empty apartment associated with the clinic.
Start-date for this position would be January 2020, or earlier. We are seeking an experienced candidate interested in potential buy-in for co-ownership (a few years in the future), but would consider the right new graduate. With the right timing, mentorship in fall 2019 would be possible for a new grad. Don't be scared of the potential for ownership, as this is a great way to help pay off student loans, and is really a best-case scenario where the duties of ownership are shared amongst the owners and practice manager to make it as low stress as possible.
Our philosophy for our equine practice is that we should be practicing the same quality of medicine as an AAHA accredited small animal hospital (and the small animal hospital IS AAHA accredited!). We believe in educating clients to help prevent unnecessary emergencies, and in promoting proper preventative care. This includes rewarding those current clients who are proactive in their horse's healthcare. We are constantly striving to make our practice better, and believe in quality over quantity.
This practice is located in Southern VT, approximately 20 minutes from both the NH and MA borders. This area is great for the outdoor enthusiast, as there are many areas to hike, camp, mountain bike, horseback ride, swim, ski, etc. Brattleboro and Keene offer many great restaurants for the foodie.
If you have any questions, or would like to schedule a phone interview or clinic visit, please don't hesitate to contact us. Dr Lea Warner firstname.lastname@example.org or Bobby Sturk (practice manager) email@example.com or call the practice directly at 802-254-5422 and speak with our phenomenal front desk staff!
