SoBran is seeking a Research Support Specialist III to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for supporting / maintaining animal colony and relative studies for the LAD lab/multiple investigator’s protocols.
Description of Duties:
Manage multiple animal studies running concurrently in different phases, by following respective ASP’s; Animal Study Proposal’s
Maintain rodent animal colony in respect to technical procedures and breeder maintenance. Technical procedures include but not limited to: bleeds, IP and IV tail injections, oral gavage, tag, ear punch, and oversight of special diets
Maintain integrity of the research process, including detailed accurate record keeping to include updating the animal inventory database, routine animal observations, as well as procurement, processing, and preservation of specimens
Independently perform irradiations including: irradiate mice using Gamma Cell 40 irradiators in Bldg. 50 & 4; accurately calculate exposure times from current Dose-Exposure chart provided by Radiation Safety; accompany new LAD personnel during training sessions
Set up and monitor mating cages
Practice universal precautions appropriate to different levels of ABSL. Work safely with animal / human pathogen biohazard’s, and help to maintain the research animal facility as a safe work environment / operation
Schedule time in expectation for meetings with investigator’s, outside the facility if necessary, to assist in coordinating animal research needs
Serve as the main “point of contact" or “Liaison” for the lab in conjunction with the Comparative Medicine Branch contract staff
Report any animal health, care, and / or well-being concerns to the appropriate facility management staff
Report any facility infrastructure, relative to the animal holding areas and support areas, to the appropriate facility management
Ability to work planned flexible hours to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out to comply with appropriate timelines to include weekends and holidays as needed
Ability to interact with all personnel in a manner which promotes a professional work environment
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Experience: Must have security clearance and training required to use Gamma Cell irradiators. Must have experience in laboratory animal care and computer program proficiency such as MS Word / Outlook / Excel. Must have a proficient technical vocabulary.
Required Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor of Science degree preferred; be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or equivalent education / experience.
