We are currently seeking an Animal Facility Specialist I to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Poolesville, Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of an Animal Facility Specialist I for the NIH Animal Center in Poolesville, MD. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of laboratory animals. The function of the Animal Facility Specialist I is to ensure staff assigned to each position is trained and accomplishes assigned work in accordance with SOPs, policies and guidelines associated with the expectations of their position. This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel, and issues within the facilities. We expect the Animal Facility Specialist I to be forward thinking by creating and assisting in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on this contract. The Animal Facility Specialist I must possess strong communication and teaching skills.
This position’s responsibilities include:
Understand and follow all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards
Coordinate daily tasks to ensure everything is completed in a thorough and efficient manner
Manage animal caretakers to ensure everyone is working as an efficient and cohesive team
Develop and foster effective teamwork among the staff and management team
Set and clarify goals, and prioritize/coordinate work schedules
Use imagination and creativity when seeking solutions to problems, considers the potential impact on other areas of the program
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
Maintain and foster good working relationship with clients on daily basis
Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health and behavior in various large animal and livestock species
Identify and fix facility related maintenance issues
Monitor compliance on daily husbandry requirements, technical services and/or clinical support for the assigned area
Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and investigative staff
Perform daily feeding, health checks, and sanitation when staff are absent
Perform daily facility security checks
Receive and transfer non-human primates according to SOP
Ensure that animal rooms and barns are disinfected as scheduled
Conduct daily and weekly facility walk throughs and identify any issues and follow up with staff to ensure all items have been resolved
Maintain approved cage changing schedules, monitors cage space availability, animal census and coordinates the entire operation of the area
Safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste. (eg. Package for autoclaving or incineration, arrange special pick-up for chemical/radiological waste, document use/disposal as directed)
Ability to lift heavy weights and spend long hours standing, walking, and supervising facility activities
Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure
Provide guidance and training to husbandry staff
Interview potential applicants for open positions
Create daily and monthly reports
Assist with disciplinary sessions and performance reviews
Participate in/present weekly facility related or SOP training
Maintain and QA employee training records
Read and edit SOP’s, as needed
Report all animal and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate chain of command
Act as facility POC when the task manager is absent
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
Required Schedule: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned. Works hours may vary but typically are scheduled between 6:00 am and 3:30 pm M-F, and 5:30 am-3:00 pm on weekends and holidays
3 – 5 years of experience working in a laboratory animal facility
Possess a valid driver’s license
Employees’ appointed to the position of Animal Facility Specialist I must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:
BS in Animal Science or a related discipline preferred
A Master of Science degree preferred.
Certification: Must hold a current AALAS certification at the LAT level
