SoBran is seeking a Program Support Specialist to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (LARC 11).
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Program Support Specialist/Floater for SoBran’s animal care contracts. This person is expected to have a general familiarity with day-to-day activities in multiple facilities working with multiple species. We expect the Program Support Specialist/Floater to be forward thinking and able to use their knowledge of basic facility practices to accomplish tasks in a wide array of positions and assignments.
This position’s responsibilities include:
Understands and follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards
Performs daily activities of a cagewash technician (duties may include but are not limited to): a. Clean and sanitize all animal caging and accessory equipment and maintain the cage washing area in a clean, neat and well organized manner. b. Dispose of waste from the facility c. Help with cage changing and room sanitation d. Identify cracked, broken, malfunctioning caging and reporting it to supervisor. e. Perform routine preventive maintenance on the cage washing equipment. f. Assist in maintaining a clean and well organized facility. g. Familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in the facility. h. Submit written records, charts, logs. i. Receive and store supplies, feed and bedding. j. Record temperature & pH in the am and pm. k. Disposes of dead animals following standard SOP’s and policies
Performs daily activities of an animal caretaker (duties may include but are not limited to): a. Changes animal caging, to include feed and water, according SOP’s and/or specific approved protocols and the schedule established by floor supervisor. b. Sexes and weans animals according the SOP’s. c. Maintains daily animal census sheets, room equipment and status form sheets, and other forms requested by the floor supervisor. d. Cleans and sanitizes animal facility and assigned rooms according to SOP’s e. Maintains and repairs animal caging and support equipment. f. Receives, examines, transfers, identifies and properly houses incoming animal shipments according to SOP’s. g. Assist with the restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as requested by the investigators h. Assist in any contract related activity as assigned by the floor supervisor or complete daily assignments. i. Assumes a position as a team leader which includes helping to prepare the floor, solve everyday problems with minimal supervision, assisting other caretakers as well as the supervisory staff and maintaining an air of professionalism at all times
Performs daily activities of a veterinary technician (duties may include but are not limited to): a. Assist veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alert veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems b. Administer clinical treatments as directed (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID) to critical and chronic animals c. Monitor the health status of in-house animals d. Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and/or minor procedures e. Collect physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.) f. Calculate drug dosages g. Identify and communicate signs of abnormal or poor health h. Observe and identify abnormal behavior i. Maintain medical records accurately k. Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs; bend, stoop, climb and stand for a prolonged period
Routinely safely handles and disposes of hazardous (biohazardous, radiological, or chemical) materials
Perform any other duties as assigned
Schedule Requirements: All employees are expected to arrive to work at the time specified for the position to which they are assigned. Work hours typically occur between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm M-F. These assignments may include working on weekends and holidays and will be at the discretion of the Program Management Staff. Weekend/Holiday hours range from 6:00am – 6:30pm.
Required education/experience: High School Diploma required. There is an expectation of certification at ALAT level or equivalent training or experience.
